Discord was built for community chat and gaming voice calls, not podcasting, but its free, low-latency voice channels are stable enough that plenty of small shows use it as the actual recording call, especially community and gaming-adjacent podcasts.
The appeal is cost and convenience, if your guests and community already live on a Discord server, there's no extra app to convince anyone to install.
The real gotcha is that Discord has no built-in recording function, so you need a separate bot like Craig, or a local screen and audio capture tool running the whole time, which adds a point of failure outside Discord's control.
It's a fine option for a casual, low-stakes show that doesn't need per-guest local high-resolution tracks, but professional shows chasing clean audio usually graduate to a dedicated remote recording tool.
